Park Rmilat: Tangier’s Hidden Green Oasis

Park Rmilat, also known as Perdicaris Park, is a lush, tranquil escape from the bustling city streets. Named after the famous American-Greek businessman and diplomat Ion Perdicaris, who once owned the surrounding estate, this park is a favorite among locals and visitors seeking nature, history, and breathtaking views of the Strait of Gibraltar.

A Glimpse into History

The park is part of the larger Perdicaris Estate, once home to Ion Perdicaris, a prominent figure in Tangier’s early 20th-century expatriate community. His villa, known as “The Place of the Nightingales” (“Place des Rossignols”), still stands nearby, adding a touch of historical charm to the area.

Perdicaris himself became famous due to his kidnapping in 1904, an event that sparked international attention and led to the “Perdicaris Incident,” where U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt famously declared, “Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!” though Perdicaris was later released unharmed.
